The story of Squirrelman is one of my favorite news stories this year. Not only does it include a hero with a cute nickname, it also takes place in a treehouse, features a pet rat named Lucky, and as of this morning - it ends happily. Seattleite David Csaky, aka "Squirrelman," was facing an eviction from his Eastlake treehouse yesterday. The 52-year-old homeless man built the place himself. He settled in 30 feet off the ground with Lucky, a ferret named Rainbow and a squirrel named Tilt. "It seems like he's kind of like this urban Tarazan," one bicyclist told KING 5. And as Seattle Metroblogger writes, he wasn't bothering anyone. But once the city got word of his living situation, they put the pressure on for him to move out. Csaky was about to have no place to go. But then the tide started to turn. He was given a 10-day extension on his eviction notice, and his neighbors, who must have developed a soft spot for the guy, bought him an RV off craigslist. "This is the beginning of a new life," he told the Seattle P-I today.Update: According to the Big Blog, a Seattle Film Institute grad is shooting a documentary about Squirrelman.
It's nice to see something end happily for a change. Squirrelman was bothering noone, but of course, when our city found out, they had to interfere. Our Mayor offering him a cot at a shelter was a nice gesture, but we all know the only reason the offer was made is because Squirrelman found himself in the media limelight. I wonder why our Mayor doesn't go out to those folks living under bridges, and in boxes around Seattle and offer them the same deal. Oh....that's right....no spotlight. Good for you Squirrelman! I hope your life becomes happier than it has been. We're all pulling for you.
great new web site!!
I appreciate the nice neighbors who bought this guy an RV, but I have a couple of questions:
1. Where is he going to park it?
2. How will he afford the gas to drive it?
I think the Mayor's offer for the cot at a shelter would've been a better option for this guy.
Obviously, Squirrelman has some building skills. And thank you to those who offered him a home in the motorhome. Now, how about one of the builders around the area, offering him a job? Perhaps Habitat for Humanity?
He's a bum who did something clever. Make him get a job and pay taxes like the rest of us. I can't believe how some people like to "assist" in his disregard of all the standards WE are accountable to as homeowners and taxpayers. I'm not even a Republican either, just a very hard working person who knows that hard work is required to put a roof over my family!
That's way more clever than I was expecting. Tnhkas!
