The Everett Herald today includes an article about how pet owners are giving their critters more people-like names. It seems Chihuahuas, Labradors and terriers are going by names like Samantha, Jennifer and even William III these days, instead of the classic "Fido" or "Buddy." That's definitely true. (My labradoodle almost ended up with the name "Steve," until we thought better of it.) One onlooker told the reporter: "When you hear people calling out these names, sometimes you wonder whether they're calling their dog or their child." Experts say pet ownership has increased to nearly two out of every three American households, and people are spending more money on their pets than ever.

No wonder about it. They are.

The funny thing is, I want to name my baby after the dog I had in high school. Thankfully it's not "Fluffy"

I kind of like people names for dogs, but only names that aren't used that often. My favorite golden retriever as named Charlie (he could smile on command) and my bullmastiff is named Manny (after Manny's Pale Ale from Georgetown Brewing). Naming your dog after your favorite beer is probably best. We often get little freebies that we wouldn't normally get.

We named our golden retriever Apolo, after Apolo Ohno, the speed skater. We got him six years ago right after the 2002 Winter Olympics.

I usually try to name my animals after movie or book characters. Over the years I have had Anakin Skywalker, Professor Dumbledore, Harry Potter, Capt. Jack Sparrow, Lilu (from The Fifth Element). My boxer/pitbull is named Brianna, Brie for short. I think that is better than her stripper name of Cookie that she had when I adopted her.

Yeah. I have cat named "Gracie". I just gave her a name that fit her personality. Gracie is a total klutz. She is the most ungraceful cat I have ever seen.

I have always had "real people" names for my dogs. Over the years, I had bassets named "Humphrey" and "Daisy-Mae", "Elwood" and "Emma-Jean", a Rhodesian Ridgeback named "Franky", and now a St Bernard named "Bentley". And, yes, I do spend money on my dogs. I purchased pet insurance for Bentley due to the cost of vet bills for the other dogs as they aged, got sick, and eventually passed. I'm also feeding Bentley organic dog food. It's alot healthier then alot of the dog food out there on the market. Maybe if I feed him healthy food...he won't get cancer like the others did.
