Lakewood cop Dustin Carrell is attracting quite the fan club after helping a family of ducks cross the road Monday. The 28-year-old was off duty when he stopped traffic on Highway 512 to usher the mom and ducklings across the road. A DOT camera captured the incident, and now the video has become an online hit. People across the nation - and even from other countries - are contacting the police department to thank Carrell, including a Wisconsin man who wrote: "Just when I've about lost all faith in the human race, your officer has restored some of it with a simple act of kindness." But the act has earned Carrell a new nickname. Apparently cops at the station have taken to calling him "Ducky," which just seems a bit embarassing.
What an awesome way to spend 5 extra minutes out of your day!
We thank you for your compassion.
I remember a book from elementary school called, "Make Way for Ducklings", with a picture on the cover of just such an incident. Maybe the officer subconsciously remembered that book.
What a hero. You should be very proud to have such a person with a good heart on your side.
That officer did a great thing. Not only did he save those ducks, he potentially prevented serious accidents that could have happened if people tried to swerve to miss the ducks.
I am very proud of Officer Carrell. That was a very decent and heartwarming deed.
Officer Carrell is a hero, not because he cares about ducks, but because he has maintained a caring attitude in a job and society that so often leaves people jaded and calloused. Thanks, we need heros.
I've seen several police officers in local cities doing this same thing, and it a great example that cops aren't just there to give tickets.
this officer is a great example of people at their best.
