I was pretty star-struck when Drew Carey came into to the KING 5 building today, and tickled when he agreed to a very brief interview. As minority owner of the Seattle Sounders FC, he is in town to announce the new Members Association, which will allow paying members to be involved in decision-making for the soccer team. They can even vote to fire the general manager. Here's what he had to say about the voting process:Drew Carey: "We have a vote every four years. And every year, if you want, if you get 20 percent of the members to sign a petition, we'll have a vote that year. So we could potentially have a vote every single year, to maybe vote off the general manager. "
Any truth to rumors that Seattle could snag Thierry Henry?
Drew Carey: "Once you start paying attention to soccer, you'll notice that every week there's a big player that is rumored to go to like five different teams. Thierry Henry's in the middle of a negotiating year ... I have no idea. And I think Thierry Henry would ask for more money than Beckham, I really do think so. And he's a really great player, and I don't know, but if we get a chance to get him, we'd take him. But I really don't know what chance we'd have. Unless they took my share of the team and gave it to him (laughs). I don't even think that would be enough."
Can you tell me more about the team marching band?
"How I got the band idea, at all the MLS games and Galaxy games they have little kids come out and play soccer during halftime for 15 minutes ... I like that little kids get a chance to play on the Galaxy field, but I want it to be a little more - kind of a show. So I thought gosh, we should have a marching band come out and just play during the game and get the crowd pumped up and then coming out at halftime, marching down the street and around the stadium before the game starts. Like a really great college band. It came from my boredom with watching 10-year-olds play soccer."
Do you think you'll become a Seattle regular?
"Yeah, oh yeah, I'll be up here for every game that I'm not working."
As an "amateur sports fan" I'm happy to have MLS coming to the area. The fact that Drew Carey is associated with it is just icing on the cake.
He's become such an icon over the past umpteen years -- so having him be a part of our local sports lore is pretty awesome. :)
