So much for the standard butterfly tattoo. The latest tattoo trend seems to be getting permanent tributes to four-legged friends. Seattle pet blogger Lisa Wogan looked into it, and writes: "I saw tats that ran the gamut from photo-realistic portraits and cartoon renderings to stylized names, paw prints and abstract mementos." She features a pet tat by Seattle artist Ed Lott on her blog today. I found this image on a dog training Web site, where several pet owners display their tattoos. While I adore my pooch, I just can't fathom getting this done.

I was devastated when I had to put my cat Chloe to sleep. She was a very special kitty to me, as many cats or dogs hold dear places in their people’s hearts. I wanted to do something because she had made my life so much more joyous by just sharing in it with me. Chloe would come prancing up to you when you whistled, and once you started petting her, she got so happy she would suck on her paw like a toddler sucks her thumb. She did that all her life. I have a few other tattoos, all more or less discretely placed (if I wear a tank top, then you see the ones on my shoulders) and I decided to get a tattoo of Chloe on my left shoulder. I took one of my favorite pictures of her in to the parlor and the tattoo artist did a wonderful job. A tattoo is forever, and I wanted something meaningful to me. It’s a personal choice. Some people get their pets cremated and keep the ashes, intending to be buried with them. Some take the body of a beloved pet to a taxidermist. To each his own.

I tattooed my dog's name on the inside of my arm when he saved my life. I never want to forget those terrifying four hours, nor my dog's heroic efforts. He's been gone for two years, and I'll never get over it. He was loyal, faithful and true.
