After kicking off the "Give Your Car the Summer Off" campaign - to encourage more walking, biking, carpooling and transit riding - our evergreen mayor Greg Nickels proposed "Car Free Days," where some city streets would only be open to bikes and pedestrians (similar to Bicycle Saturdays & Sundays on Lake Washington Boulevard.) Proposed locations include Alki, a loop from Pioneer Square to Pike Place Market, and a connection between Magnuson Park to Seward Park. West Seattle Blog tracked down Seattle Department of Transportation boss Rick Sheridan to check its status. Here's what he said: "Parks and Recreation jumped the gun as no definitive decisions have been made. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is still fine-tuning the concept and needs other departments (fire, police, etc.) to approve it. Outstanding issues remain about mitigating the impacts on nearby streets and finding city resources to support it. The three corridors mentioned are, at this point, only possible locations. As we move further along in the process, we are interested in hearing the public's perspective on the idea itself and suitable locations. SDOT should have more information to share in the next few weeks."

Oh, well done. Delete the photo that causes controversy and then DELETE ALL THE COMMENTS AND COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE THEFT OF THE PHOTO, instead of simply apologising and addressing the issue.

Bravo -- well done.

Not.

CAR FREE DAYS!! YAH RIGHT! not when I have to drive 25 miles to work, and 25 back. A total of 50 miles. If I take the bus it would take me 3 hours. Who is Nickles trying to kid!!
