It seems like everywhere I went last weekend, people were talking about that Critical Mass confrontation on Capitol Hill. If you recall, cyclists trashed a Subaru that was driving through the July 25 Critical Mass ride, but accounts of what happened have varied. Like it or not, the group's reputation is tainted at the moment. But there's another group with a mission similar to Critical Mass that uses less aggressive tactics. RideCivil meets at Westlake Center each month in Seattle for hour-long rides around the city. They aim to promote civility among bikers, motorists and pedestrians. I'm not too familiar with these guys (I just learned about them today), but their Web site reads: "We signal and stop, smile and wave, ride two abreast and yield to pedestrians. We won't be corking or blocking traffic, just safely cycling our city." Sounds like just the message Seattle needs at the moment. The group expects up to 40 people on its ride tonight, starting at 5:30 p.m.
