After doing a little homework, Blogging Georgetown uncovered the real backers behind an anti-bag fee Web site recently launched called StopSeattleBagTax.com. West Seattle Blog had reported Washington Food Industry, a grocer-advocacy organization, claimed to have launched the site to gather signatures to cancel the bag fee/foam ban. Blogging Georgetown dug a little deeper - turns out the site's domain is registered to the American Chemistry Council. West Seattle Blog is still waiting for comment from WFI's spokeswoman on their relationship with the Chemistry Council.
No surprise there.
Who cares who's behind it? Sign me up, the bag tax is ridiculous. And has anyone noticed that it only applies to necessity shopping? High end stores are exempt.
With all the problems this city has, THIS is the kind of crap our idiotic mayor is focusing on?
I'm all for repealing this law, where do I sign?
The rest of the state (and country, for that matter) continue to laugh at Seattle and the games played by your mayor and council. You make San Francisco look normal.
take a look at this and then tell me we don't need to get rid of all plastic bags.

Here's a thought.
How much money is the city going to actually make off this " Bag Tax " when a majority of people will just go outside of the city to do their shopping ???
Did you ever consider that Mr Nickels?
Did you ever consider that possibilty City Council?
So high end stores will be exempt huh ??
NO SUPRISE there.
Seattle's motto:
Welcome to Seattle that'll be 15%
Welcome to Seattle, That'll be an extra 25 cents
Welcome to Seattle Bend over and Take it Bitch !!!
This city's officials are seriously brain dead and easily manipulated by a select few.
Fuck you Seattle
Fuck you mayor Nickels
Fuck you city council
And a big fuck you to anyone who actually supports this idiotic tax.
Wow.
We are moving to Seattle from Florida this year. You guys have got it GOOD. I am in awe at what your mayor does for the environment and other things. I am sure he has points that are not favorable. In Florida, these things are never passes never even thought about. We think of Seattle and the west as very progressive. The plastic tax is really just to get people to stop using the dumb plastic and containers. If people were not lazy it wouldn't be an issue. I haven't used plastic bags in two years.
and other thing...
Other European countries have this tax and the plastic bag and container usage went down 96% in like 2 years. I have been there and I ask people about the bag thing. They just say it is better and don't understand why "the fat dumb Americans don't do the same. They think we are lazy like I said before.
If you don't like Seattle or your mayor then try moving to Florida or any where in the South..then you will REALLY have something to complain about. Not this tax thing. Get over it.
I'm gonna save up all my bags and sell them to seattlites for 10 cents - how do you like THAT Mr. Mayor???
*laughs* Linda, you rock!!
Andrea, you have to understand. Seattle is one of the highest taxed cities in America. We have one of the highest rates for parking tickets, too.
This is just the straw that broke the camel's back. And I think one reason that people are railing so hard against it is because this is one thing that we may be able to change. Unlike many of our idiot of a mayor's other policies. He is destroying the character of our city with his "anti-night life" and "pro-developer" policies, and it seems we can do nothing to stop him. The changes in this place in the last 15 years, well, let's just say that 98% of them are not good.
Of course, protecting the environment is a good thing, (I don't own a car for that reason) but with all the other issues we face--health care, increase in gang activity, crime, the crushing of the poor at the expense of the rich, etc--THIS is where he puts he primary focus?
Which leads me back to this, the bag tax only applies to necessity shopping--groceries, drug stores--those shopping at Nordstrom and Macy's don't have to pay it. That doesn't sit well with me.
Additionally, the tax does not only apply to plastic bags, but to paper bags as well. Paper bags are completely recyclable, recycle in a short time and are made of recyclable material. They should be exempt.
I think the problem here is excessive government. We are forced to recycle, than charged for the privilege of doing something the government requires us to do. We are fined if there are too many recyclables in our garbage and vice versa.
Enough is enough is enough. I think people have just reached a breaking point.
Meantime, the city is too short-sighted to see the historical value of Seattle's last remaining news stand, which has been in operation since 1920, and protect it accordingly. (see the blog on this site for details)
Here is the bottom line. I'm glad they are behind the anti bag tax fee, as are probably many other tax payers. Washington state has the highest top three taxes in the whole United States. No surprise there when Christen Gregoire is another democrat in a long line of democrats that rule the Washington State monarchy of Seattle politically and psychologically. Tax this, tax that, then spend on bullkaka programs such as the RTA which very few will use. Oh, lets replace the alaska way viaduct and both the 520 and I90 floating bridges too. It's not their money. Who cares! Theres not a damn thing wrong with the bridges. You Seattle imbeliciles are so stupid as to not realize a well constructed bridge can last over 100 years with proper maintenance. What does that have to do with the bag tax? Alot! People can become so deluded that money will solve all problems, expecially when it's not yours and some eco-nut convinces people the tax is neccessary. Who do you think that eco-nut has their political interest for? Oylmpia! You may get you bag tax anyway. I don't care. Seattle is the cesspool of Washington state, and I dont hang around with its contents. Pay for it yourselves, and leave those who don't share your views alone. Tim Eyeman, you have my vote on your next tax cut initiative :)
"?"...You sell plastic bags to dump rubbish! To
Place food in the freezer! To put left
overs in the ice-box! If you live in an
apartment building, you use the plastic
bag for trash (especially if there is a
garbage shoot in a highrise)...there are
many uses for these plastic items and of
course, you grocery store does allocate
cost of plastic or any carry out bag to
products in the store (e.g. food, foil,
plastic bags, plastic forks...etc) and of
these non-food items YOU the consumer
already pay a TAX for! ????Why additional
taxing...?to get rid of plastic usage???
My dog is laughing (you need plastic to
pick up your pets poop when walking in
public!!!!
I say NO to this ridiculous bill..WHY?....
above says it all.!!!!!!
If you are willing to buy real estate, you will have to receive the business loans. Moreover, my mother always takes a student loan, which supposes to be really reliable.
At last some riatonaltiy in our little debate.
