After this week's disheartening news about elephant Chai's miscarriage at the Woodland Park Zoo, the Daily Weekly blogs about critics of the zoo's breeding program. It seems that a group called Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants had warned that it is unethical to breed Chai because her daughter, Hansa (shown here), died of a herpes infection last year. A spokesperson for the group told the Seattle Weekly earlier this year that the zoo is a "herpes-stricken facility," and any calf born there "runs an extremely high risk of dying from herpes." Chai, who suffered a miscarriage Thursday, had been artificially inseminated. But the cause of the miscarriage won't be known for weeks to come. And zoo curator Nancy Hawkes said: "As in all mammals, miscarriages are not uncommon, especially during the first trimester."

Breed, elephants, BREED! For crying out loud, The zoos need more elephants. How are we supposed to get 'em? Miscarriages are common. The zoo should just keep them a secret!
