A month after an angry confrontation between Critical Mass bicycle riders and a motorist that left riders and the driver injured, Friday night's ride came off without a hitch.
The smooth ride was probably helped by a strong police presence and riders somewhat chastened by a backlash from last month's ride.
I saw some of the footage on TV and think the police should have ticketed those without helmets.
hey not a rider, why do you care if a cyclist wears a helmet or not? i just don't get that....a cyclist w/o a helmet on poses no threat to you. seems like what you want is just for a cyclist to get punished for something. mind your business and drive your car responsibly. i'll mind mine and ride my bike responsibly.
Critical Mass has always been a fun smooth ride. Even the police had smiles on there faces last night, and drivers as usual were honking in support.
And as for the comment of a helmet, I think personal safety is of the sole riders concern and none of anyone elses. If that is all you can say about Critical Mass, I think you should definitely start taking the bus.
Any preventable injury drives up health care costs for everyone across the board. Without statisical evidence but based on observation and demographics, riders who do not wear helmuts seem to be among the underinsured and so place a special burden on the public to pay for their costs (yes, the answer is health care reform but that's another topic). Additionally, any injury on the roads (or sidewalks) is pretty much going to incur additional public expense from law enforcement and medic services and loss time and productivity.
But this kind of thinking involves a sense of social responsibility...not something critical mass is showing in great quantity
Bravo, Medical care provider!!
Nicely put. Hard to see how rider, another rider, or anyone else, could argue with that.
besides wearing a helmet is the law...just as if a driver drives without seatbelt...I am a cyclist and wear a helmet...not only for safety..."talk to the guy who was hit in the head by a side mirror on the Hood canal bridge"...and see if not wearing a helmet was a smart thing...also its the law...just becuase your 20...a hispter fixie dixie...does'nt mean you have the right to break the law...completly amazes me why messengers don't have to abide by the law...no helmets...no signals...rideing the wrong ways..inproper lane changing....oh...and lets not forget "CORKING"...gives real cyclist bad name and left to defend againt angry drivers
Critical Mass is awesome. Not all riders get buck wild. :) [drawing about bike love] http://www.zegiel.net/?p=468
Sorry to interrupt, but I'm trying to embarrass the guy posting as seattlelovemonger...the jerk who sold me a bogus cell phone in Everett - you bum, I hope you feel good about ripping off a single mom who was down and out.
