August through October is harbor seal pup birthing season in Puget Sound. To protect the many vulnerable "pups" that will be sleeping on local beaches and rocks and waiting for their mothers' return, NOAA is training a group of much needed volunteer "seal sitters" to keep people and dogs at a safe distance and educating the public about the baby harbor seals. Their first training session in West Seattle had a big turnout over the weekend, but it's not too late to get involved. The next training session is September 9th at the Alki Community Center from 7-9 p.m. Even if you don't become an official "seal sitter," you can help by remembering the key thing is to leave the seals alone and keeping a 100 ft. distance.
