Seattle Metblogs has the details on a grand opening celebration this weekend at the Colonnade Park in Seattle's Eastlake neighborhood. The event marks the completion of an extensive urban mountain biking course at the park built by volunteers from the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance. Metblogs calls the Colonnade "probably the most secret of Seattle city parks," maybe because it's mostly hidden under I-5. I happened upon the place this spring, and was surprised to discover the funky bike course tucked under the freeway. It includes twisty trails, a ladder bridge, teeter-totters and more. Very cool.
It is very cool. You didn't even mention the public art palm tree growing under the freeway, made possible by computer controlled electric lights and rain. Very cool also is the way the park makes Eastlake relevant to Capitol Hill forty five years after I-5 and the way the whole thing makes you wonder why we don't use wasted under-freeway space more often.
