Washington couples who want to call it quits can no longer use a Web site that promised an easy divorce. Washington Divorce Online helped couples fill out and file divorce forms in court. The site stopped offering services after admitting they didn't have lawyers on staff. A review by the attorney general's office found the site violated state law by allowing employees to work without the oversight of an attorney licensed in Washington. The site is now offering refunds to customers who complained.

Sad but not unexpected. When you offer a simple, money-saving way to short-circuit using lawyers for a process that shouldn't need them, they'll pile on to make sure you get stopped. There has to be a way that allows the average couple to handle an uncontested divorce without the added expense of having a useless lawyer tagged on to the bill. Perhaps it's time to think about an antitrust or RICO lawsuit against the Washington State Bar to protect our rights before the lawyers steal more of them away from us.

So, were any marriages dissolved through this site and if so, were the divorces legal?
