I was at Macy's tonight when Barack Obama was elected the first black president of the United States. People started hugging and cell phones started ringing. The 47-year-old Senator is our 44th president. Where were you when you heard the news? And what are your thoughts on this election?Update: Media reports say a crowd of roughly 2,000 poured out into the streets outside Pike Place Market tonight, shouting "yes we can!" TV crews showed the masses moving to Pike and Broadway, waving flags and Obama signs. Capitol Hill Seattle Blog has video. Seattle Metblogs has photos.
I was pulling my money out of all my accounts and sending it overseas..except for the small amout i used to buy survival supplies..when the democrats drive this country head first into the ground...i'll be the first one to say....i told u idiots this would happen!!
We're screwed! GO DINNO!
Wow -- I'm glad to be the first positive comment on this issue. In fact, I don't know a single person who voted for McCain..
Tonight was so historic! I cried tears of joy because I wasn't sure it would really happen. After past elections where ballots were lost, dropped off piers into the ocean, and voting machines were failing to work, I just wasn't sure this country could pull through.. WHAT A VICTORY!
Words can't express the sense of relief and joy I'm feeling. This is a whole new beginning and finally we have the opportunity to have a President lead us in the right direction. This is monumental.
It will take years to clean up the mess that GW left behind as the worst US President in history. Hooray for all of the first-time voters!
I'm also relieved it was a landslide election. It's sad when nearly half the country can't agree on a candidate. At least more people are excited than disappointed.. right?!
really, you kept your money in when the republicans tanked wall street, and you think Obama is going to drive us in the ground? That would be pushing us to Australia, since we are already pushed under. Only way is up baby, and if you can't take pride in the power of the american voter, the historic moment of racial equality, then take your poison elsewhere please.
Now as to the question, I was with my children, coloring in the US map as the states were called, and when the commercial break was over, and silence filled the room with a splash screen naming Obama as our 44th president, tears slipped down. I have never been this emotionally charged over an election, and the happiness and joy in our home was immense.
I can't believe they declared it when the polls had barely closed (2 min) on the west coast!
Where are you bums , pimps, drug dealers, dead beats and low lifes going to get the money for your free welfare checks when people with enough money to tax leave the country with there money. from oprah or wesley snipes.
See ya later right wingers, have a good move out of the country.
Where will you be moving too? Europe is socialist as is Canada. Too many mexicans in mexico. Asia might work, except for all the minorities. You might find comfort with the other religious extremists in the middle east, except they're all scary muslims... So where exactly will you guys be taking you and your money too?
I guess there's always antarctica...
You honestly think people with money are going to leave Rod?? Where are they going to go? Canada?? Where it's really hard to get your house and you basically have no choice in elections?? Or Mexico where people are coming here for the chance of freedom?? Your silly! This is the best thing to happen in years! It's going to take a long time for Obama to clean up the mess that Pres. Bush has done. Let me guess you voted for him both times right??
Finally the excuss of the white man holding the black man down cant be used anymore after 200 years. And a plus is when your daddies come for the welfare checks you can meet them for the first time if you can figure out whos extended abandoned families they belong too.And Michell can be proud to be American for the first time in her life.
ROD- YOUR AN IDIOT!! GO BACK TO 1776 WHERE YOU AND YOUR BELIEFS BELONG!
I'm black and i agree with rod. We always say the whites are pushing us down now we have a black president so we cant say us blacks cannot be someone. we all make fun of white people (well in my group of friends) yet my friends get pissed off if they make fun of us.
Lindsey- Do you agree with him about the welfare checks? And his other remark? That's what has me mad!
My sister had sent me a text when she heard that Obama had won. I couldn't have been happier!!!
Several of us gathered for the evening, hoping fervently for the end result, at which time we popped the champagne cork. We have had 8 grueling years of an arrogant, poorly spoken, narrow-minded, stubborn, out-of-touch president who has had a hand in destroying our country's reputation in the eyes of the rest of the world. While we now have an untested president, we also have one who is obviously intelligent, soft-spoken, well-spoken, sincere, and "in touch" with us. We wish him nothing but the best in what is a major undertaking cleaning up the mess we're in. GWB, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
First I'd like to say I'm pleased that we as a nation were able to look past color lines. However I am not sure that Obama was the best choice. I'm very concerned with his stance on taxes, and a national health care plan. The tax issue will hit hard...and yet again if you are wealthy and have worked hard to get there, you'll be punished. (For the record I'm not wealthy.) I wish him the best of luck and I fervently hope that my fears will prove groundless.
("The tax issue will hit hard...and yet again if you are wealthy and have worked hard to get there, you'll be punished.")
Kristy the wealthy will continue to be well off there is no doubt about it. 250,000 a year come on now. Yea they may have to budget a bit and be a little more frugle, Fire the in house maid, get rid of the Chef, take fewer trips to the Spa. Then the rest of America will be back on track. Us middle class Americans are struggling. from Gas to rising utility bills and lets not forget the skyrocketing cost of groceries. These are things that the Wealty sneeze at, It's simply a non issue. When most of us are one paycheck away from being homeless.
Wow. You really think you can afford a maid and a chef and spa trips on 250 a year. Hmmm. Regardless when did the American dream become don't make money because if you do we'll take it away cause it isn't fair to those that don't make as much as you.
Last year I was married and my husband was earning 6 figures. (200,000) per year. We didn't have a maid, or a chef...in fact Hamburger Helper was a common meal in our house. So yeah, it wasn't like we were rich or something.
We are since divorced and I'm back to living paycheck to paycheck. I still eat hamburger helper and still don't have a maid or a chef.
I have a huge problem with this idea that if your wealthy you should pay more. Last time I checked we weren't living in a socialist nation. Each person needs to take responsibility for themselves.
If I go out and make a success of myself and earn enough money to be wealthy why should I be punished for that? Or be expected to give the money I worked hard for to everyone else?

Kristy,
Families of 4 living on much less than $100,000 a year are not reduced to eating Hamburger Helper!
If you and your husband were eating it you either a) just like Hamburger Helper or b) were spending a hell of a lot of money on something else, from your comments, sounds like it might have been crack cocaine. But, if not, you must have traveled or shopped a lot, or had a ridiculously high mortgage. That is to say, you were spending way beyond your means on things other than food.
And, yes, it’s possible to do that, even on a very high income. Just look at all the lottery winners and millionaire celebrities who wind up declaring bankruptcy.
The only other possibility is that you have 7 or more children.
I agree that even on $200,000.00, you could not likely afford your own chef, or a full time maid, but you could well afford to have a maid service come in once a week. And a trip to the spa every few months would in no way be beyond you means. I pay a mortgage of over $1000.00 a month and can afford a visit to the spa, as well as a $100.00 meal at a restaurant once or twice a year and I maker FAR less than $200,000.00 per year! Over $150,000.00 less.
And, yes, in a civilized society, the wealthy should bear a larger tax burden. We are one of the only, if not the only, western nation that does not do this. There is a well known quote which states that you tell the level of civilization of a culture by how it treats it's most vulnerable citizens. By that standard, the U.S. is not all that civilized.
Your comments reveal that you are one of those who think that any one who works hard enough can make a high income (and, conversely, that those who don't are lazy or not trying hard enough). Nothing could be further from the truth. Millions of people work hard all their lives and never get above the poverty line. There is only so much "pie" to go around. It is a finite thing. So no matter how hard people work, some are going to get a much smaller slice.
You and your ilk absolutely sicken me
PS. If you make $200,000.00, you make more than 97% of the U.S. population. Which does indeed qualify you as rich.
Well me and my ilk, do believe you can work hard and make a success of yourself. I do not personally believe that success is counted in money. I personally make about 48,000 a year right now. I am now a single parent, pay 1500 a month in rent and make just enough to pay my bills each month. I'm figuring out how to afford Christmas gifts for my kids. However nowhere in there do I feel that someone "rich" should step in and hand me some cash, simply because they have it and I don't.
As for our previous spending habits...Hamburger Helper is a food we did/do enjoy, we spent money on paying bills, and climbing out of ten years of debt when we earned as little as 40,000 a year in California.
I'm sorry that my attitude of personal responsibility sickens you. My "ilk" is one of work hard, support yourself and your family and be happy in what you do.
I posted what I felt were reasonable responses, that were not attacking in nature and tried to be well thought out...if that comes across as spending my money on crack cocaine, well so be it.
