The Seattle Times reports that a local activist has filed an application to have the Alaskan Way Viaduct named to the National Register of Historic Places. Apparently Art Skolnik said the viaduct and Battery Street Tunnel are "two of the more innovative and creative structures built during that decade." He has twice submitted an application of this kind, but the first ones didn't meet required standards - and weren't accepted. If this application passes muster it would be considered by the governor's advisory committee on historic preservation. In the meantime, the state is weighting a handful of options for replacing the aging Viaduct. More details are here. (WSDOT photo)
