Note to self: When driving a charter bus, don't go down an icy, hilly street that ends with a ledge over I-5. This afternoon, two buses tried to navigate icy Melrose Street near Denny Way on Capitol Hill when they slid, collided and crashed into the guardrail that overlooks I-5. The impact shattered the windows on one bus, which ended up having both front wheels hanging over the ledge. The passengers inside, about 75 young people with the Columbia Basin Job Corps, naturally freaked out. "Everybody was just screaming, crying. Everybody had to climb out the emergency windows," passenger Nicole Maxie said. Some suffered minor injuries and a few were taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. Expect a lot of gawking along northbound I-5.
Some clarification,
on 18th at about 10:30pm, one of these two buses was climbing from Bellevue Ave up to Denny Way even the road was closed. And there were many witnesses who were having fun sliding that night on Denny Way.
