I was at a dinner party over the weekend where the host had beautifully decorated her holiday tree - and then displayed it upside down. I'd never seen this done before, but it's not a new idea. Aside from providing a trendy conversation piece, it's apparently popular if you have pets running around the house, or maybe gifts that are too big to fit under the tree. I read online that back in the Middle Ages, Europeans inverted their trees to represent the Trinity. But some people think that's disrespectful, and prefer for the tip of the tree to point toward heaven. My fiance's mom says she hung her holiday tree upside down when her son was a toddler, so all the ornaments and tinsel were out of reach of his little hands. Plus, she thought it would be a magical experience for him to be able to stand under the tree and gaze up at all the lights and ornaments.

I actually like the idea and have never heard of anyone doing it. My only thought would be... watering could be a problem. But I'm sure there's a brilliant idea for that.

In Yelm this means you're a Ramtha follower. You'll see lots of strange inverted pyramids made of christmas lights including two christmas trees on the roof of a store that look like an hourglass. This is their symbol to channel the spirit or something. The bonus is the normal people figure out which businesses to avoid the rest of the year.

I have decorated my tree like this for years. I love the way the ornaments hang. It is a definite conversation starter also. Check out my trees from the last two years at

This is not a new idea. In fact, I have a handful of friends who've displayed their artificial trees this way for some 20 years. It was the trendy thing to do back in 2002 or so. And, there is a retail window at a California store that uses upside down trees for their holiday display every year. The artificial trees are designed to hang upside down from the ceiling and come with special hooks.

Must be interesting-- trying to keep the tree watered!

My mom surprised us years ago with an up-side-down tree, hung from the ceiling, when we all arrived for our annual gift-fest! She said she was inspired when she realized we would not have enough room for our growing families AND gfifts if the tree took its customary place on the floor! She made the local newspaper when a friend "turned her in" for her unique idea, so in addition to the usual gifts, we each got an edition of the Gazette in our stocking!!!

Merry Christmas!

Great post. I especially like hanging the tree so your fiance-to-be could gaze up at it from below.

I was at the party also (hi Katherine!). The tree was artificial but looked great. The hostess told us the story of trying to find an upside-down tree holder (I didn't know there was such a thing). She couldn't find any, so she had a welder make one. It has a small profile and sounds like it'll last many seasons.

'twas a great dinner party. I hope your mom-in-law-to-be is settling in well!

I absolutely love my new upside down tree. Tons of room for gifts under it now, instead of spreading all over the room. My kids love this tree, and insist that the snowmen are all upside down. I collect snowmen, and now have 250 and counting on this tree. It is beautiful, with little clips of snow on the end of each and every branch. Sets real good on a flat floor, but when I put it on my carpet, I had problems, it wanted to sway, and lean a lot. I wanted it in the frontroom, so, I just wired it to the wall vent with some very strong wire, and it works just great. Everyone loves it, and is a very good conversational piece. Very interesting, and very unique, I will hate to take it down. Took most of one day to put it up, and decorate, but it was all very well worth it. What a great idea, wish I would have known about this tree a long time ago.
