I was sad to read this week that the Capitol Hill group Home Alive is struggling enough to close its office and eliminate paid staff. Daily Weekly blogs that the organization is going into "partial shut-down mode." It was formed in 1993 in response to the death of local singer Mia Zapata, and has since served the community by offering affordable self-defense classes and education about violence prevention. Learning how to defend yourself can be empowering. I have spent time volunteering for Home Alive and even enrolled in one of their self-defense classes, which ultimately inspired me to start learning martial arts - now one of my favorite activities. Now, burdened by debt, Home Alive needs help. A community meeting is planned at 1 p.m. Sunday at Home Alive headquarters (1415 10th Avenue) to discuss the group's future.

Hey there,
I just wanted to let you know about my website: savehomealive.org. I have ok'ed it with the HA folks and am really hoping it will help put a dent in their debt and get them back up and running quicker than planned.
