Last year, to encourage more citizens to ditch their cars, Seattle organized Car Free Days in select neighborhoods. Main thoroughfares were blocked off from car traffic, and pedestrians, bicyclists, runners (and anyone else on alternative methods of transportation) were free to roam. It proved so successful, the city is expanding the program this year with their Seattle Summer Streets program. Six events are scheduled from April to August, with the first event set for Friday, April 10 in the Greenwood/Phinney neighborhood. Other cities hold similar events, with much success. More information reportedly will be posted on www.seattlecan.org/summerstreets/ later this week.
I really like this idea. I remember when we were in Paris 2 years ago and they shut down large streets for roller skaters and bikes around Notre Dame one day. It was an amazing sense of community in a city of 12 million. Seattle could be like that too.
Bonne continuations.
In Bogota, they call it the “Ciclovia” http://www.streetfilms.org/archives/ciclovia/
One participant, in the video above, calls it: “the best thing that has come to Colombia”
