Harry Potter is a very original series in just about every way where as Twiligh is a rip off of several different books. I'd vote for...neither. They may be entertaining books, but they're certainly not classics. I'm actually disappointed that there isn't better literature being written for young readers than books like these. It took me weeks to get through Twilight because it was almost entirely dialogue and I was so bored with it. As a teen I read voraciously, but I always tried to challenge myself with books that made me "think". Reading books like "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" is like a steady diet of soap operas. Read them if you must, but I would hope that you are also choosing to read literature that makes you think and learn and grow as a reader.

Neither of these series are of any literary value. As a teenager, we were required to read substantive books like "The Great Gatsby", "Of Mice and Men", "To Kill and Mockingbird"...Why is the SPL even giving this a second of thought?
I have read the Twilight series (had to see what the hype was all about). It is probably one of the worst written series, flipping tense, typos, shallow dialogue, and VERY repetitive. How many times does the author need to explain how good Edward smells to Bella...Good God...we got it!
Harry Potter is an entertaining well written series of novels...but are just entertaining, they don't promote any sort of mental stimulation or intelligence.
SPL needs to seriously rethink their events...The teenagers reading these books need to realize that they aren't doing anything for their intellect by reading either of these.
JK Rowling is a better author than Stephanie Meyer hands down. Both series are entertaining, but the Harry Potter books cross gender and age lines. The Twilight series is completely aimed toward tween and teenage girls.
But really I agree with some of the other posts on here. There are so many great classics out there. HP and Twilight are nothing to "To Kill a Mockingbird"!!

Haven't read either series, but intend to give Twilight a try. In the meanwhile, after being reminded of To Kill a Mockingbird and Atlas Shrugged (both excellent), the book that comes to mind is Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. I probably read it 30 years ago, and some of the eye-opening and brain-stimulating concepts are still in my head.

Stephanie Meyers is not a better author than JK. Meyers got my attention but Rowling grabbed me for the entire series. Meyers is geared toward teen girls where as Rowling crosses age and gender barriers. I've read Twilight, and it's really entertaining. But there is no comparision with HP. Do you really think, that just because you dream of Edward Cullen, that makes Twilight a good book? No! EHarry Potter is a more well thought out series and I prefer it to Twilight. The only reason Twilight wins these surveys is because all teenage girls and young women come on this to vote. Harry Potter reaches many more audiences than Twilight ever will. If Harryy had been described as Robert Pattinson and played by him nobody would ever think twice about this survey.
Harry Potter anyday and my reason for that can be answered by looking at the comments. Harry Potter fans say Harry Potter and explain why talking about how it is open for all types of readers and is not just about romance or one specific genre. Twilight fans write... "EDWARD CULLEN IS HOT AND HARRY POTTER ISNT, TWILIGHT WINS AUTOMATICALLY BECAUSE IT IS AMAZING AND I HAVE READ IT 19 TIMES ALREADY." Well congradulations that you read it so many times, does that mean it is better than Harry Potter which you probably never picked up because it wasn't about romance and it was a long book. On top of that, I would bet that at least 3 quarters of the Twilight fans only read the books because they saw Robert Pattinson in the movie and only LIKED the books because everytime they read Edward Cullen they pictured Robert Pattinson. I give the one comment that tried to back up Twilight by saying that it won best book series on Nickelodeon's Teen Choice Awards. Unfortunately I'd like to point out a few things. HP didn't become famous because of a movie, but because of the amazing story and world J.K. Rowling created for the earth to ponder. If you're holding out for universal popularity, I'm afraid Harry potter will be winner for a very long time.
On the other hand twilight is basically...... not good (politely speaking). Why you may ask me, well because you cannot compare it to Harry Potter, at least to me, for these following reasons:
1- J.K spent more than 15 years on her plot, which turned out to be fantastic. While Stephanie just dreamed about it and started writing, she didn't plan her plot, and mark my words this affected her plot severely.
2- J.K's writing is very captivating, it grips you like a hook and makes you read obsessively. While Stephanie's style of writing though some may find it good, is very weak, she uses the words too often and she writes three chapters each time she wants to describe how good looking Edward is.
3- J.K's series is not only intended for females or a specific age group, as you can see many children, teenagers and adults enjoy it. While Stephanie's saga is basically for young females who didn't read many books to be able to judge with a professional point of view, though I don't call myself a professional, nor am I belittling any reader.
4- J.K's plot is new, it is appealing, no one ever had that idea of a boy who lived due to amazing circumstances. Stephanie's plot isn't new, well I don't call human\vampire affection new, that is used in many books. Since vampires are known to be very seductive and lustful.
5- J.K's characters are very well imagined and described, you can relate to them and find them similar to who you are or people around you. Stephanie's characters well not all of them, but most, are very annoying and rather dimwitted, I wish not to relate to them to tell you the truth.
Should I continue, I think I made my point for you, however most of the people here won't like it.
At last i would like to give advice to twilight fans (in words of albus dumbledore ) those who had read harry potter series that sometime you have to choose what is right over what is easy and those twilight fans who had not read harry potter series 'Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.'So please read the books before complaining.

1- J.K spent more than 15 years on her plot, which turned out to be fantastic. While Stephanie just dreamed about it and started writing, she didn't plan her plot, and mark my words this affected her plot severely.
2- J.K's writing is very captivating, it grips you like a hook and makes you read obsessively. While Stephanie's style of writing though some may find it good, is very weak, she uses the words too often and she writes three chapters each time she wants to describe how good looking Edward is.
3- J.K's series is not only intended for females or a specific age group, as you can see many children, teenagers and adults enjoy it. While Stephanie's saga is basically for young females who didn't read many books to be able to judge with a professional point of view, though I don't call myself a professional, nor am I belittling any reader.
4- J.K's plot is new, it is appealing, no one ever had that idea of a boy who lived due to amazing circumstances. Stephanie's plot isn't new, well I don't call human\vampire affection new, that is used in many books. Since vampires are known to be very seductive and lustful.
5- J.K's characters are very well imagined and described, you can relate to them and find them similar to who you are or people around you. Stephanie's characters well not all of them, but most, are very annoying and rather dimwitted, I wish not to relate to them to tell you the truth.
Should I continue, I think I made my point for you, however most of the people here won't like it.
At last i would like to give advice to twilight fans (in words of albus dumbledore ) those who had read harry potter series that sometime you have to choose what is right over what is easy and those twilight fans who had not read harry potter series 'Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.'So please read the books before complaining.

Only mindless teenage girls (and some boys) will think Twilight is better. They wouldn't know good literature if it bit them in the ass. Those are the people that drop out of school because they think Shakespeare is boring and is not worth reading. Now, I'm not saying that Harry Potter can be compared to Shakespeare, because Shakespeare is and always will be the king of literature. All I'm saying is that Harry Potter actually has substance. The characters are not cookie cutter and they all have flaws, which make them more relatable and likeable. I read the books because I was bored and there was nothing else, but as I did, all I wanted to do was slash my wrists. The writing was HORRIBLE. There was constant repetition and the characters were AWFUL. Example? Bella. She's this whiny girl that falls in love with a vampire, and she does not have any flaws (except for being clumsy). Stephanie Meyer KILLED my love for vampires by making them sparkly. Edwards immortal you say? Well, let's just see if he survives Avada Kedavra.

These are some of the arguments that I've heard on numerous sites supporting Twilight:
-The Twilight people are prettier!
-The Harry Potter books are for smart people! (I am not making this one up! I've heard it 4 times on one site from different people!)
-It just is!
-There's no love in Harry Potter!
-Twilight is more realistic!
-This is one I heard that made me roll on the floor in laughter:
"And when you read the twilight series its a series you can put down, you know, cause it's boring. The HP books would keep you up, too exciting. That's why Twilight is waaay better than Harry Potter."

Okay, here's my response.
-There are more important things than appearance! Any Harry Potter fan knows that. Meyer cannot quite grip that concept.
-Um, if you're saying Harry Potter is for smart people, what does that say about Twilight? That it's for stupid people? What a compliment...
-"It just is" is NOT a valid reason. At least state WHY you think it is better.
-How is there no love in Harry Potter? Harry Potter is all about love! It's about how love is the most powerful thing in the world! There's unrequited love, friendship love, family love, motherly/fatherly love, and a little romance as well. Oh, you mean there's no good looking creeper stalking the helpless main character. Bella and Edward are NOT in love; it is merely lust and obsession caused by neither character having a life. The only thing Bella "loves" about Edward is his beauty, as well as his eternal life.
-Even though Harry Potter has more magic, it is still more realistic that Twilight. Do you know why? Because Harry Potter characters go through realistic emotions. Hogwarts is still a school, and it shows real situations we all can relate to. Harry Potter shows the characters growing up, and I have been lucky enough to grow up with them. Twilight's school is a place where you're automatically popular unless you're a vampire. There are NO realistic emotions within any of the characters, who don't have personalities. Nothing to relate to.
-Um... okay. I always found that a good book keeps you excited and hungering for more. I don't like books that bore me. But to each his own, right?
Twilight is anti feminist and unbearably shallow. There is NO moral. Living forever is NOT a good thing, but like I said, Meyer is too shallow to figure that much out. JK Rowling deals with all kinds of depth, and every time you read it you find something new, even if you've read it 15 times already.
All Bella does the entire series is whine and complain non-stop. Oh, she does pause occasionally to talk about how pretty her sparkly vampire is. She is so pathetic, it is beyond words. She's also extremely rude and abusive towards her friends, using them when it is beneficial for her and then dumping them like garbage. She's not the only abusive one. Edward abuses Bella. He manipulates her and dominates her and controls her life. This is NOT "selflessness". Meyer tries to pass it off like it is, but it doesn't take a genius to see that it isn't.
Harry Potter is better that Twilight in every way, shape and form. Twilight is a fad that will disappear in a few years. Harry Potter will live on forever. :)

Okay...I've heard so much about this argument and I never really commented on it so I'm going to now.
In all honesty I think Harry Potter is better than Twilight in books and movies. And I've read both series.
I'm not saying that Twilight is the worst book ever, but the series' books don't compare to the Harry Potter books in writing style, characters, or action. Twilight is aimed strictly towards tween and teenage girls and doesn't possess that much sophistication as compared to Harry Potter which crosses to all ages and is more structured than Twilight.
Not only that the Twilight series became a bit cheesy as it went along. In other words it became a little too predictable. Harry Potter had a few downs but it holds up through the serious and doesn't become very cheesy because it focuses on its main conflict through all the books unlike Twilight where it seems like there's no true clear conflict at times.
Plus the main character is very annoying and unrealistic at times. Bella is way too dependent on Edward, vampire or not, and she whines and complains most of the time throughout all of the books. In all reality no teenage is that dependent or that needy. Harry is a little whiny at times too but his true personality is never lost and never truly bores the readers as much as Bella does.
Not only that Twilight's characters, especially in the movie, appear very shallow and dull at moments. The vampires do anyway. The werewolves have some life in them which is why in any Twlight situation I'm team Jacob and I go for werewolves. Characters in a book should be equally entertaining and mesh together creating a nice group. However the characters don't seem to mesh well at all aside from the fact that there are vampires and werewolves.
In Harry Potter all the chracters mesh and are cohesive with one another whether they are major of minor. They all have life and personality and they shine when needed to.
Movie wise Harry Potter wins also. Primarily for its actors. All the people in the Harry Potter are great actors especially the main three, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Even the minor people are great actors in these movies including when Robert Pattinson when he played Cedric Diggory in The Goblet of Fire. The special effects and energy coming from the actors gives the movies the extra boost.
With the first Twilight film, although the lighting was, in my opinion, fantastic and the music helped set the mood and tone a ton, all the actors were not on the same level especially the main two. I actually liked Robert Pattinson in Harry Potter but in Twilight he loses his edge throughout the movie however he holds up alot better than Kristen Stewart. She adds no true life to the character of Bella. She talks in a monotone voice with absolutely no feeling which doesn't make me like the movie at all. Taylor Lautner and Ashley Greene, who play Jacob and Alice respectively, are actually my two favorite because they seem to add life and personality to their characters more than the others.
Even with a few funny and sweet moments here and there all in all Harry Potter wins over Twilight. The story is well constructed and is done justice by the actors who portray the books in the movies.
For all people who say Twilight rules give reasons and don't put your comments in all caps. It's really annoying. Same with anyone who just plainly says Harry Potter rules. And don't put down one series because the Twilight series, as a whole, didn't suck and neither did the Harry Potter series. I actually liked the first book and part of the third book of Twilight but I enjoyed Harry Potter alot more with the exception of trying to get through the fifth book. Took me a while.
