Beloved former Mariner Edgar Martinez is up for the first time for a spot in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, but it'll be at least a few years before he gets voted in for the honor, say sports pundits, including SeattlePI.com sports blogger Greg Johns.

Results will be announced Wednesday. Winners need to be named on 75 percent of eligible voters' ballots.

I'd vote for him if I could - I still get chills remembering the chants of "Edgaaarrrr... Edgaaarrrr..." echoing through the Kingdome during game 4 of the 1995 American League Division Series against the Yankees every time he was up at bat. He had not one, but two homers in that game, including a grand slam that sealed the win.

Good luck, Edgar!

Update: Edgar fell short in the balloting with 36.2 percent of the vote. Hall of Fame watchers say that's not bad for a first outing though.

I love Edgar Martinez! He has always been a great role model for kids. I think he definintely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
