As divorce rumors swirl around Madonna and Guy Ritchie, Us Weekly alleges the nearly 50-year-old pop queen is romancing former Mariners star player and Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, says FOXSports.com. The magazine reports A-Rod has made several late-night visits to Madonna's New York City apartment and attended her April 30 concert in NYC. Madonna, in turn, sat in his seats at Yankee stadium at a June 22 game, and her 7-year-old son, Rocco, was seen wearing Yankees gear three days later. The two were spotted last February dining together in Santa Monica, and earlier that month, A-Rod attended a fundraiser Madonna-hosted for Malawi and UNICEF. No comment yet from camp A-Rod, who is married and has two daughters with wife Cindy, but The New York Post reports Madonna has strongly denied any cavorting between them. The Times reports that Gardenburger meatless patties are disappearing from Seattle area supermarket shelves and restaurant menus due to production delays. As a result, chief competitors Boca Burger and MorningStar Farms can't keep up with the increased demand and their supplies are dwindling as well. QFC, Fred Meyer, Metropolitan Market, PCC and TOP Food & Drug all report the veggie burger shortage, and Red Mill Burgers in Phinney apparently ran out of meatless patties over the weekend. Kellogg's, which bought the Gardenburger brand in November, said the production delays were due to quality-control issue at its Gardenburger plant in Clearfield, Utah; they've now resumed production. Aiming to break stereotypes, reporter Sammy Heward tells the story of someone you wouldn't think of as a typical Belltown addict, writing: "With the advent of the "Belltown crack smokers" video, the focus is negatively on the male disenfranchised black person smoking crack in the alleyways of Belltown. But it is the widespread usage among people you don't usually notice which belies the stereotyping of the crack smoker as a dribbling dirty black man completely addled from smoking crack." The result is a write-up about an encounter with a 30-something girl Heward calls "Hanna" who visits Heward's apartment and takes Heward along on a trip to buy drugs. Interesting stuff - but it's scary how easy it is for Hanna to get a hold of drugs in the neighborhood.

I've been reading up on the City Council's vote Monday to renew a tax break for developers who build housing that the city deems "affordable." The move is meant to provide affordable places to live for folks like firefighters and some teachers, but Seattle Times reporter Sharon Pian Chan writes that it has sparked a debate about what exactly is "affordable" here. From what I gather, this measure would benefit those who earn 80 to 120 percent of the median income. For example - a single person earning $46,705 (that's 80 percent of the median income next year), or a household of three earning $90,110 (that's 120 percent). And for a person earning $46,705, the city says a studio that runs $1,115 a month is affordable. But opponents say the city needs to concentrate on helping low-income residents - not the moderate-income residents targeted by this measure. And others fear that this will just pave the way for yet more condo developments. The Times has more info.

The Stranger recently reported on a very cool project occurring on Capitol Hill. As more shops are vacated and boarded up to make way for Light Rail, Sound Transit has invited Seattleites to fill the spaces with temporary art installations. State Farm Insurance, a shop called Makeovers and Jack in the Box are among the spots that have been beautified as part of the project. A cartoon group called Friends of the Nib encircled Jack in the Box with vinyl banners, with each artist contributing a panel. But this weekend someone had to go and ruin a good thing. Apparently they took a razor and sliced away a panel that featured a drawing of a jazz trio. The artist tells the SLOG: "the missing vinyl panel of my artwork is hanging in some garage or dorm or in a dumpster somewhere. The work was supposed to be up for several months, and now no one will see it." The theft has prompted a discussion whether artists are asking for trouble by leaving their art outside. Says one commenter on SLOG: "Somebody hung cool artwork on a condemned building behind a chain-link fence and got surprised when it was taken?"

Starbucks' Peachy Apple Tart was only 120 calories, with 12 grams of fat - or so they claimed on their Web site. But one weight-watching customer/blogger did the math and realized that was impossible, and brought it to Starbucks attention. Suddenly, the nutrition information on Starbucks' site was changed, and the Peachy Apple Tart was listed at 280 calories, more than double the calories than before. A simple mistake or a plot to deceive calorie-counting customers foiled? Either way, Ms. Bitch Cakes is quite upset, blogging about Starbucks' mistake and raising the question: Can Starbucks' nutrition information be trusted? According to The Biz Buzz, the July issue of Travel+Leisure features a cover story about "50 Fabulous U.S. Travel Ideas," one for each state. And Tacoma came in at No. 6, mostly for the "incandescent beauty" of its colored glass. "This once industrial city has become an international destination for glass art. The birthplace of acclaimed glass designer Dale Chihuly, Tacoma is home to not only the Museum of Glass, but also galleries, shops, and a few unexpected spots that have embraced the medium." I think Tacoma's museums are pretty awesome, but the news got a mixed reception from some. "While we're happy to hear the news (one Suite133 coworker was heard saying "Suck it, Seattle!"), we're a little peeved concerned about Dale Chihuly being our one and only claim to fame," blogs Exit133.

An apparent dispute over who would be the first to exit a parking garage near O'Asian Kitchen on 5th Ave. in downtown Seattle resulted in a 50-person fight early Saturday, blogs Belltowner. One woman was pulled from her car and beaten, and a man was stabbed in the abdomen, say police. He was treated at Harborview with non-life threatening injuries. At one point, onlookers got involved and the scene turned into a "free for all, a huge melee." Police quickly responded, and the suspected stabber was arrested and booked in King County Jail for investigation of assault.

Washington Hall, a 100-year-old historic landmark performance hall in Seattle's Yesler Terrace neighborhood, is now on the market for around $2.5 million, reports the Times. The long list of the hall's performers and speakers reads like a who's who of African American greats. Jazz legends Elle Fitzgerald, Fats Domino, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington packed the hall before they were allowed to play mainstages; other performers include James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. Even the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke there. Crosscut had reported last year the hall would likely get sold and demolished. Whether the building now gets converted to condos or is preserved as a historic landmark rests on who offers the best price.
