One look at recent national headlines is enough to know that bullying can have harmful, and sometimes tragic, consequences. A mean message, even a seemingly simple one, can cut to the core of the recipient. A Seattle theatre group is using drama to show that to students, hoping to get the message across before it's too late, and providing students with tools to help prevent bullying in their own schools.

On February 7, students and youth in Tacoma will learn some important lessons about the issue when Taproot Theatre's Road Company visits. They perform their educational touring play "New Girl," which deals with cyberbullying, at an assembly at Mason Middle School that morning, then perform "Treasure Ally" at the Tacoma Rescue Mission that evening.

Bullying directly affects as many as one in four students, studies show, and technologies such as e-mail, social networking sites, blogs and text messaging have extended the potential for bullying from the playground into cyberspace.

Guided by Seattle-based Committee for Children's acclaimed bullying-prevention curricula, the Road Company teaches students how to respond to, and even prevent, bullying and cyberbullying. The Road Company's method is simple: Present a captivating story with compelling characters, and weave lessons on respect and bullying prevention into it. Then when it's over, the actors interact with the students, reinforcing the lessons. One look at the statistics is enough to show the urgency.

In the United States, 15-25 percent of students report being bullied, and 15-20 percent report bullying others, according to the "Stop Bullying Now!" website of the Health Resources and Services Administration. In some cases bullying has led to suicide. For the offenders, it can lead to suspension, expulsion or even criminal charges. In Washington, nearly 15,000 students were suspended and 442 expelled in 2008-2009, according to data published by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction last January. In King County alone, 2,231 students were suspended and 89 expelled.

In Washington, a new expanded anti-bullying law took effect in June, stating that although a law had been put in place to prohibit harassment, intimidation and bullying, the problem had failed to decline. The new law expands efforts, requiring schools to institute policies regarding harassment, intimidation and bullying, and requires each school district to appoint one individual to be the primary contact on the issue.

"Don't Tell Jessica...," one of four plays in the 2010/2011 touring repertoire, teaches students the dangers of gossip, rumors and cyberbullying and the consequences their actions can have. The season also features the brand-new "Treasure Ally," along with the popular "Super School" and "New Girl." Taproot Theatre commissioned Bethany Wallace and Josh Hornbeck to write the scripts.

Touring to schools throughout the Puget Sound region and across the Pacific Northwest, the Road Company has performed for over one million students since it began touring social-issues plays a quarter of a century ago.

My name is Julie Schmidt, Derick is not Amy's biological son he is mine, he is my youngest child. I think this is bizarre that he is being crutinized because he wants to be important by writing books, and being a voice for other gay teens if thats what he is really doing. Derick and his brother was taking from me when they were young under false pretenses basing the fact that I am disabled I don't have a right to be a parent. They meaning the state and my family stoled my life from me, I left because I wanted to try to fix what was left of my life. I got my prayers answered by mere mistake, I happen to mention to this kid on myspace 2008 cool picture, was going to ask if I could use the picture on my account, had no idea that what I would find out next would shock me completely. I got a message back calling me horrible names, stating don't contact my kids, and I was going to leave it at that. Then that afternoon these kids contacted me stating mom, this is Clay and Derick, and that is when they started sending me massive amounts of emails stating abuse, neglect, in every form and aspect. I instructed them to call CPS,the police to get help and no one listened. 2009 they came to see me telling me that they both wanted to committe suicide because of all the abuse, I by mere Grace of God got to spend a little time with each of them on their birthdays. I watched Prayers of Bobby with Daric, explained to him that I want nothing but happiness for him and if being a person that likes boys makes him happy so be it as long has he is being smart about it. And what I mean is understanding of serious sexual diseases out there, not dating over his age for his own protection things of that nature. But research lately tells me he is in alot of trouble I may not be able to see or speak to my boys that Igave birth too, because of her lies, but thats another matter all on its own. But there is something like freedom of speech, and concerns for the safety of my son's and that right of stating I gave birth to them can never be taken from me, no matter how many lies she tell's. Daric is a confused child, he is a very smart teenager, his books, being of paperback seem interesting from what I hear even though I can not obtain a copy of them. But if Daric's facts can not be verified by any means and if its found that he is lieing about anything that can put another person's life in danger then he should have to answer for it, so he understands the responsibilities and the consequences behind his actions. The questions I have been asking myself if he is doing stuff wrong, doing stuff illegal then why or why is his supposed adopted mother not answering for his actions. The adoption of these kids by all intensive purposes was illegal and if I ever come across the financial means to prove it I intend too. Until then I will post what I feel, and I hope i am listened too.

I can be reached at spiritually23@yahoo.com. But be prepared I keep copies of everything so no threatening, slandering or demanding emails, or it will go to the cops. and if you don't identify yourself you will not get a response back and make sure you put your age on it.
